Blog 1: Advertisement

Prompt 1: The cultural artifact I choose is an advertisement that's promoting the company Trojan, a condom brand. The scene takes place at the beach with multiple women, multiple pigs, and one man. Half of the ad has people on the sand, several people in the ocean; pigs surfing, jet skiing, and a woman and a pig at the edge of the ocean with her hands up. Each woman is presented in the advertisement is being interrupted by a “pig” which is a representation of men. Showing a sign of disturbance. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the ad we see the word evolve and Trojan in bright yellow words. With the following statement be a man use a condom every time.

Prompt 2: The Trojan ad is implying that women are always going to be more attracted to men that use protection or else they are considered pigs because using protection is what ca prevent sexually transmitted infections. The scene where the advertisement takes place is a beach where women are in an environment to expose their bodies. If you are a real man you are willing to check girls out, take photographs of them while they are in relaxation, disturb them, and touch them without their consent. In contrast, to a real man is considered having respect towards women, showing their happiness together, and pleasure of being a couple. Only being faithful to one girl. The reason why the ad says, "choose the one who uses a condom every time." Giving an understanding of why we should always prefer someone who is clean rather than being a dirty person, not caring. Respecting your own body and not letting any man di respect you in any way.

Prompt 3: The advertisement is selling the gateway towards more women and intimate relationships as well as portraying the objectification of women and the stereotype of men. The ad portrays women as objects by categorizing them by their bodies and beauty. Lack of diversity and shapes of all women portrayed in this ad do not account for all people in society. The importance of diversity is a fact that society isn't focused around a certain race or color, but more on blends and mixtures of people. Furthermore, the size of the women portrayed in this advertisement excludes women of all different shapes, not portrayed in the ad. Society believes that the typical woman is skinny, tall, fit, and pretty. Women are used for their body, if you have a nice body the advertisements will make you look better and give the image of how women are supposed to look. Pushing an ideology that women that fit in this criteria are the ideal women in having sex with. Yet, with women portrayed as objects, men are portrayed as a "typical" an ideal man. They fall for what society agrees to, and that’s the type of woman they want to intimate relationships with. One excludes thicker woman especially in ads unless it's about losing weight that’s when ads believe its right to have them on their advertisements. One might say it's not about looks, but in reality, it seems that what men focus on they want to have the perfect girlfriend when that doesn’t exist.

Prompt 4: The cultural object for this advertisement is the Trojan condom because of the item being sold. Having our creator as the actual Trojan company. While our primary receivers are men because the advertisement is of condoms which are indicated for men to be used while having sex, for safety, and protection. Moreover, if a woman read this ad they would agree with men not always having their consent and doing inappropriate things while woman feeling uncomfortable. In relation to the ad, it shows that the ideal couple is being represented as clean, being respected by a man, and happiness not a disturbance. The representation of pigs for men Social World would be referring to young attractive men that are physically active. It targets men specifically because they are the one who has to use caution when having sex preventing a woman in getting infections or getting women pregnant. This is why the ad states, "Be a man. Use a condom every time." It specifically says be a man, because a woman is the ones who want to be with men who believe using condoms is the right thing to do. Not only just once but every time they have sex, which relates to the word evolve also stated in the advertisement. Saying you're slowly changing for the better, you're developing your ways into becoming a man if you do not use a condom.

  1. Hello, I agree with you analysis of this advertisement because it perpetuates the idea that "boys will be boys" and ties to the way the advertisement company used pigs to portray men. This ad is relevant to the course material because the gender expression used on it matches with the way a man should behave towards women under the society's standards. I also agree with your statement on how this ad doesn't show bigger range of body types from the female models and it also falls under the traditional roles and positions that women usually have in an ad where they interact with male models.
